Abstract

The article elaborates a critical reflection on the documentary The white death of the black sorcerer (2020), by Rodrigo Ribeiro, seeking to highlight the testimonial power of a suicide letter written in 1861 by an enslaved black man. The filmic writing gives this document the force of a cry that echoes the pain, suffering, the power of speech and the face of blacks enslaved and silenced by the annihilation of the memory of their existence and the dignity that make them human and bereaved. The narrative offers us the chance to produce a response to the enunciation of violence by the “nameless” of history. The survival of the words recorded in this historical document reopens the deepest wounds in the secular history of the genocide of black people in Brazil.
